Saints And The Lord’s Supper”
Saints And The Lord’s Supper”
Title: “The Saints and the Lord’s Supper”
Text: 1 Corinthians 11:23–34
Introduction: The Scriptures contain many suppers (John 12:2; 13:2; and Revelation 19:7-9). These are significant to the saints. But few, if any, are as significant as the supper Paul discusses in our text this morning. In many respects this is the THE supper for the saints in this age. There are at least two good gospel REASONS why this is THE supper for the saints. And as we examine these verses relating to the SAINTS and THE SUPPER, it is my Prayer that we will Profit from looking at these two REASONS.
I. IT WAS AND IS GIVEN BY THE SAVIOR.
A. It Symbolizes His Scourged Body (vs. 23-24).
1. He Told Paul WHEN He Gave It (v. 23). “For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:”
2. He Told Paul WHY He Gave It (v. 24). “And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.”
B. It Symbolizes His Shed Blood (vs. 25-26).
1. He Told Paul WHEN He Gave It (v. 25a). “After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood:”
2. He Told Paul WHY He Gave It (vs. 25b, 26). “ . . . this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.”
II. IT WAS AND IS GLORIFYING TO THE SAVIOR.
A. This Is So When the Supper Is Scriptural (vs. 27-30).
1. It Is Tempting to Forget This (vs. 27-28). “Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.”
2. It Is Tragic to Forget This (vs. 29-30). “For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body. For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.”
B. This Is So When the Saints are Sanctified (vs. 31-34).
1. This Results from an Honest Examination (vs. 31-32). “For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged. But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.”
2. This Results in a Humble Evaluation (vs. 33-34). “Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another. And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.”
Conclusion: Participating in a True Scriptural Observance of this Supper will help prepare saints for a yet greater, and more glorious Supper - The Marriage Supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19:7-10). So, as we share in THE SUPPER this morning, may we do so by anxiously anticipating THAT SUPPER HEREAFTER!!!!!!!!
